Hanato Studio
Japan inspired, textural Ceramics (UK / Edinburgh)
Joanna Kitchener is the ceramicist behind Hanato Studio, based near Edinburgh, where she creates calm, considered vessels shaped by her international background and deep respect for material and process. Her work is informed by time spent living and working in Japan, alongside her Polish heritage, both of which contribute to her restrained approach to form, surface and making.
Working slowly by hand, Joanna produces ceramics that sit comfortably between functional and sculptural. Each piece is carefully balanced in proportion, with subtle variations in surface and finish embraced as part of the making process. Her forms are quiet and deliberate, allowing material, weight and negative space to play an equal role in the final object.
Joanna’s practice reflects a belief in longevity, simplicity and attentiveness — ceramics designed to be lived with rather than displayed. Hanato Studio produces work that feels grounded and thoughtful, bringing a sense of calm and refinement to contemporary interiors while retaining the warmth and individuality of the hand.
