John Wright
Stoneware Pottery & Nature-inspired Craft (Rutland, UK)
John Wright is a British studio potter based in Rutland, creating stoneware that is both tactile and thoughtfully resolved. His work is shaped by a long-standing fascination with texture, surface and the natural world — qualities he brings into every piece by combining hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques with finely tuned glazes inspired by pebbles, volcanic rock, lichen, bark and sea-worn surfaces.
Unlike makers who see the pot solely as a vessel, John believes that ceramics should engage the body and the imagination. His pieces are designed to be held, used and enjoyed daily — from simple bowls and mugs to more expressive forms that reveal subtle shifts in tone and texture under changing light.
John’s practice is shaped not only by his studio in Rutland but by regular visits to Cornwall’s contrasting landscape, where rock, tide and sky inform his sense of surface, balance and rhythm. This sense of place animates both his forms and glazes, lending his work a quiet but deep connection to the natural world.
