Handmade in England from the finest solid timber, the Hardy Chair is a tribute to the carver chair of 19th-century English life. Timeless, sustainable, and built for the long term. A chair to hand down the generations.

  • The Hardy chair is a comfortable modern carver, a true classic in the making, its single steam-bent back a true work of craftsmanship.

Two chair typologies from the 19th century, Thomas Hardy’s birth century, inspired its design: firstly the Captain’s chair originally a low-backed wooden armchair and secondly, the Smokers bow, a low back Windsor, often used in smoking rooms, public houses, barbers shops and cottages.

Old Furniture, a poem by Dorset-born Thomas Hardy, is an ode to beauty of furniture being handed down the generations. We think the Hardy chair would make Mr Hardy quite pleased.

  • We use a traditional wood oil finish followed by wax, applied by even application to the timber planks. This finish seals the pores of the timber, enhancing the natural structure of the wood and forming a water repellent protection against everyday wear and tear. This finish deepens the natural colour of the timber. One important benefit of this finish is the relative ease with which damage is repaired, as the timber can be reapplied with wax at any moment. We recommend you use only products supplied or approved by Another Country.
