Sand Buchanan
Furniture Maker & Sustainable Timber Practice (UK)
Sand Buchanan is a contemporary furniture maker whose work is shaped by a deeply held commitment to sustainability, material honesty and thoughtful design. Originally trained as a geoscientist, Sandy spent a decade working in the global oil and gas industry before stepping away to pursue making as a more meaningful and responsible practice. This shift informs his work today, where environmental awareness is not an afterthought but a guiding principle.
Working in the Cotswolds, Sand creates bespoke furniture using exclusively British-grown timber. Each piece begins with careful sourcing — often from fallen, storm-damaged or responsibly felled trees — allowing him to trace the origin and story of the wood he uses. This transparent approach reduces environmental impact while celebrating the individuality and character of each tree.
Sand’s furniture is quietly expressive, embracing natural grain, knots and imperfections through refined craftsmanship and traditional techniques. The result is work that feels grounded, purposeful and enduring — furniture that carries both material integrity and narrative depth, designed to be valued for generations
