The Hardy Collection by Another Country
Designed by British designer David Irwin for Another Country, the Hardy Collection brings together traditional furniture-making references with a distinctly contemporary lightness.
The collection began with the Hardy Chair, commissioned in 2015 to mark Another Country’s fifth anniversary and inspired by the history and landscape of Dorset. While researching the area, Irwin encountered Thomas Hardy’s poem Old Furniture — an ode to the quiet beauty of well-made objects passed from one generation to the next. That idea of longevity became central to the collection.
The distinctive curved forms of the original chair draw on two nineteenth-century seating typologies: the Captain’s chair and the Smokers bow, a low-backed Windsor chair traditionally found in cottages, public houses and workshops. Those familiar forms have been carefully abstracted and carried through the wider Hardy family.
Made predominantly from solid timber, the collection combines time-honoured craft techniques with modern manufacturing. Soft curves, turned elements and beautifully resolved junctions give the furniture a warmth and tactility that feels familiar without becoming nostalgic.
What we particularly value about Hardy is that sense of continuity. These are contemporary pieces, but they do not depend on novelty. Their materials, construction and proportions are intended to remain relevant as interiors — and generations — change.
From the compact Hardy Console to dining tables, chairs, stools and occasional tables, individual pieces work beautifully alone while sharing a recognisable family language.
