Material-Hybrid Ceramics (UK)
Modern Ceramic is the studio of Steve Cook, a maker whose work bridges traditional pottery and experimental material dialogue. Steve’s path into ceramics grew from a lifelong fascination with form and utility — shaped early by collecting vessels, drawing and painting, and later by hands-on discovery at Farnham Pottery, where he first encountered throwing on the wheel.
Rather than confining his practice to clay alone, Steve pursues a hybrid approach that embraces ceramics alongside wood and responsibly sourced recycled materials. He combines ancient craft with contemporary techniques — sometimes integrating digital tools like CNC machining — to explore the space between materials. This willingness to experiment is anchored by a belief that each combination should add meaningful purpose, not novelty.
Influences range from minimalism and Nordic design to science fiction and typography, giving his pieces a fresh energy that feels both familiar and unexpected. While the work often appears pared back and serene, there’s always an underlying dialogue between form, tactile detail and material contrast.
